Two men were shot dead as fourth-year Mitchell’s Plain School of Skills pupils were arriving at their farewell ball at Barron’s Estate in Schaapkraal on Saturday December 8.
A driver and his passenger had just dropped a pupil at the dance, when they were killed during a drive-by shooting in Knole Road. Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), said no pupils or staff were injured but they were “extremely traumatised”.
She said the owners of the venue tightened security immediately and the police were on the scene within minutes of the shooting.
“What was meant to be a celebration for the pupils was marred by this violent and senseless incident,” she said.
Counselling and support have been made available.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said detectives were investigating all possibilities.
One of the men apparently lived in a Beacon Valley house which has been searched on several occasions by the police for drugs.
