A Mandalay girl promised to do her best, to do her duty to her God and to her country, to help other people and to keep the guide law.
Erin Marman, 10, said her promise out loud in a girl guide enrolment ceremony with First Portland Guide crew on Tuesday November 5.
They form part of the Cape West Region, Girl Guides South Africa, a member country of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
With her pledge Erin joined one of the largest youth movements in the world, aimed at challenging girls and women to reach their full potential.
Girl Guides South Africa has recently revamped its badge programme, in which members have to complete different tasks to the best of their abilities.
Cape West deputy regional commissioner, Geraldine February, from Colorado Park, said
a new range of interest badges were developed to suit todayās girl.
They can do things individually and as a group, mini-Master-chef, where the girls are challenged
to hold a competition; and Survivor, where they have to learn
the basic survival skills needed
to survive in the wilderness,
backwoods cooking, stalking, tracking and also pack a survival kit.
Other proficiency badges, include boatswain, camping, canoeist, hiker, rescuer, sailing, swimmer and water safety.
Portland Girl Guides meet at 27 Colosseum Road in Portland every Tuesday from 4.30pm until 6pm.
