Police tackle shebeens in the ’Plain

A total of 677 people were arrested for various crimes in the Mitchell’s Plain cluster from Friday September 15 to Thursday September 22.

The cluster includes Mitchell’s Plain, Lentegeur, Strandfontein, Steenberg, Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Athlone and Philippi.

According to police, 101 houses were identified for drugs and 300 people were arrested for being in possession of drugs. It included 176 grams of tik, 210.5 mandrax tablets, 56 units of cocaine and 627.63 grams of dagga.

Operations were also held at liquor outlets and shebeen operations with 12 shebeens searched and 95 250 litres of liquor confiscated and two suspects arrested for dealing in liquor.

Tracing operations for wanted suspects resulted in 19 wanted suspects arrested in eight operations conducted during this past week.

A man, 28, was arrested on charges of attempted murder for the shooting of two people in Delmonte Close in Westridge on Thursday September 22. The 45-year-old man was shot in the head and the 52-year-old woman shot in her stomach. They were taken to hospital.

Mitchell’s Plain police arrested a wanted and previously convicted fraudster, Glennys Reginald Petersen, 63.

According to police, the suspect would approach people under the guise of being able to squash fines for amounts of cash.

Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson, Captain Ian Williams, said, he would then make off with the cash, not to be heard of again. “A recent incident involved a couple paying R2 000 to the ‘traffic officer’.The suspect has been detained at Mitchell’s Plain police,” he said.

A man, 26, was arrested for being in possession of a silver Taurus 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off, a magazine and 17 rounds, in Wildebees Street in Eastridge on Sunday September 24 at 8.50am.

The Mitchell’s Plain police, who were on crime prevention duties, stopped and searched the man who was in possession of ammunition.

A man, 28, was arrested for being in possession of a Norinco firearm, black in colour without a serial number in Cascade Street in Tafelsig on Saturday September 23 at 10.10am. Mitchell’s Plain police members were busy with patrols when they received a complaint of a shooting.

When they arrived, they saw a man run into a house. The members gave chase and apprehended the suspect inside the kitchen. While searching him, police found a firearm tucked in his waist. The suspect is expected to soon appear in court.
