Metro police officers arrested a motorist on a culpable homicide charge on Friday October 12.
Officers on patrol along the N2 spotted a car driving on the wrong side of the road between Baden Powell Drive and Spine Road.
They gave chase and managed to get the driver to stop. Not only did they detect the smell of alcohol on the man’s breath, but one of the officers also noticed fresh blood and hair on the vehicle, as well as damage to the windscreen.
A call to the control room confirmed that a hit-and-run accident was being attended to by Macassar SAPS near the Engen garage on the N2.
The 51-year-old man was arrested and handed over to SAPS to investigate whether his vehicle was involved in the accident.
Police are looking for information about a shooting in Tennis Street, Beacon Valley, on Sunday October 14 in which a 29-year-old man was shot dead and a 28-year-old man injured.
The men had apparently been coming from a tuckshop when somebody got out of a vehicle and started shooting at them.
Police said the motive is gang related and no arrests have been made. Cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Randall Davids of Mitchell’s Plain Serious and Violent Crimes Unit at 082 777 8076.
Police are warning about a neatly dressed, middle aged con woman who is targeting vulnerable senior citizens.
There have been two reported cases in Rocklands and Manenberg in October.
The woman poses as a grieving daughter unable to bury her mother that has just died. The senior citizens realised too late that the woman was a thief and had disappeared with their money.
“It is unfortunate that criminals prey on the goodness of the vulnerable, destroying the sentiments of helping, assisting and ubuntu. Encouraging helping hands is the greatest gift of alleviating poverty but criminal actions like this prevent the community from showing goodness,” said Captain Ian Bennett, spokesperson for Manenberg SAPS.
