Mariam Othman, New Woodlands
I hereby appeal to readers of the Plainsman to assist us with gifts and party packets for about 100 children from infants to 17 years.
My sister started the initiative about 15 years ago for children in the New Woodlands area by drawing their names and then exchanging gifts.
However, as times have changed so has people’s financial status, but the kids are always excited to get their gifts, and we don’t want to break their joyful spirits as most of them come from broken homes or homes where the use of drugs is more important than spoiling them over the festive season.
Some of the children spend most of their time at Eden park bordered by Russell Harvey Street in New Woodlands. We are a few women who always make time to sit in the park, to ensure that the bigger guys don’t smoke their drugs in there because the kids are playing.
The children take ownership of the park and will help us to keep it clean or come tell us if someone is doing wrong in their park.
We intend to hand out their gifts over the weekend of December 16, God willing.
I have posted an appeal on Facebook but didn’t get any replies. I trust that the Almighty will foresee to make this day a success. It’s for all children regardless of religion.
