There were several mass iftaars (breaking of the fast), also known as boeka, in Mitchell’s Plain on Sunday May 26.
The day also marked the start of the last 10 days of the holy month of Ramadaan.
Liesbeeck Primary School in Portland held its first mass boeka in its 38 year history.
Teacher Irfaan Abrahams said they wanted to connect parents and children and to highlight the concept of giving and family.
All religions were invited to join the meal, which was co-ordinated by Haaniem Sulayman and Tauhierah Kenny.
In Beacon Valley, more than 1 000 people of all religions attended the boeka with the aim of restoring unity in an area that has been hit by violence and gang wars.
Mayor Dan Plato and interfaith speakers addressed the community.
InTafelsig,theBreadnotBullets Safety Campaign, which was started in February this year by Mitchell’s Village Civic Association chairperson Sulyman Stellenboom, held its first street boeka on Sunday .
More than 1 800 people joined the gathering in the street.
