The City of Cape Town’s Traffic Service is today launching Operation Exodus which focuses on the long distance transport industry during the Easter period.
Traffic officers provide free roadworthy checks to long-distance bus and minibus taxi operators to ensure vehicle and driver fitness before they depart on their journeys.
These checks are conducted on buses, minibuses as well as trailers at the Bellville and Joe Gqabi public transport interchanges.
Officers also conduct vehicle checks at the Intercape and Greyhound bus depots.
If a vehicle is found not to be roadworthy, the driver is given an opportunity to address the defects, and have the vehicle retested.
Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said: “These safety checks are entirely voluntary. Some operators make use of the opportunity to secure peace of mind for themselves, but also their passengers. Many others do not. This is because some are aware that their vehicles and their drivers are not up to standard.”
For private motorists, authorities are offering free vehicle safety checks at all of City vehicle testing stations between Monday 15 April 2019 and Thursday April 18.
