Ahead of the 16 Days of Activism campaign which runs from November 25 the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10, Human Rights Day, Omunye production house launched its first video against gender-based violence called #Fightback.
Four Mitchell’s Plain men, Darren Francis, 38, from Tafelsig, Dale Sylvester, 25, from Tafelsig, Shane Sylvester, 30, from Tafelsig and Ricardo Cotton, 35, from Bayview started Omunye and collaborated with poet Chelsea Goliath who wrote a poem titled #Fightback. They celebrated the launch at The Grillfather in Westridge on Thursday October 24.
“We know the struggles people face on the Cape Flats. We may still be struggling but we’re moving towards a better goal and future. This is in our neighbourhood, it may be our neighbour (being abused). We aim to ensure this message gets to the people,” said Mr Francis.
