The Mustadafin Foundation handed out blankets and distributed soup to Tafelsig residents at their offices on Thursday August 3.
More than 500 people queued outside the gate to receive their items. The foundation’s director, Ghairunisa Johnstone-Cassiem, said they had recently received a generous donation from the Azhar Timol Charity Foundation for residents.
“We are now in the cold winter months, so we thought we would provide residents with blankets to keep them warm. Working in Tafelsig we have identified the needs in the community, which includes food and programmes to uplift the young and old.
“There are so many challenges residents face, such as crime, gangsterism, poverty and unemployment. Through our programmes we aim to address these challenges,” she said.
The foundation is an NPO, situated in Dassenberg Street, in Tafelsig.
They run a daily feeding scheme through which 500 people are fed.
The organisation also runs a range of free workshops and programmes focused on, among others, health care, youth interventions and skills development.
One of their recent successful programmes in Tafelsig is the “Isibindi” programme which was established by the National Association of Child-Care Workers (NACCW) to address the problems of vulnerable children left to fend for themselves.
Isibindi literally means “courage”, aptly describing the young vulnerable boys and girls that this programme seeks to assist with the help of social development authorities and sponsors.
