A young Tafelsig woman is in the kitchen every weekday at 5.30am to help cook five 120-litre pots of food and 50kg of rice to feed the needy in her community.
Mu’minah Du Toit, 20, helps her mother and two other men cook to feed hundreds of people from their home at 22 Matsikamma Street, five days a week, at 12.30pm.
“During that time cars can’t come through, when people queue for food,” she said.
After matriculating from Westridge High School in 2015, her applications to study nursing, teaching or psychology were unsuccessful.
Passionate about helping others, Mu’minah had also volunteered at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
“I feel I want to give back to the community, by helping them out of their poverty,” she said.
Mu’minah said every day people knock on their door for food and at least once a day, she has a hand in feeding people.
On her 20th birthday on Monday February 26, she distributed 150 party packs to children.
Making up the packs, which contained a juice, biscuits, chips and lollipop, was a collaborative effort between her, her mother and grandmother.
“That smile, that shukran, that thank you, is enough.
“It is so fulfilling,” she said.
