The City of Cape Town is urging motorists to look out for animals on the road.
This follows two separate incidents in which two horses were knocked down by cars on Baden Powell Drive, in Khayelitsha last week and in Portland on Sunday May 27.
A car collided with a horse and cart, transporting children to the beach just after 1.30pm on Sunday on the corner of Morgenster Road and Merrydale Avenue.
Law enforcement inspector Wayne Dyason said the children were okay but the horse had to undergo surgery. “We feared that the horse may have had to be put down however brilliant work by the SPCA’s (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) veterinary surgeon managed to save the horse’s life after it was admitted for an emergency surgery,” he said.
To report animals on the road or for any emergency call 107, from a landline, or 021 480 7700, from a cellphone.
