Masjidur Rawbie in Portland hosted its monthly social event, which includes breakfast and lunch, for about 100 seniors from the community on Wednesday October 30.
Coordinated by Moegsien Johnson, Yunus Isaacs, Yusuf Jacobs, Abubaker Solomons and Ebrahiema Moosa, the mosque’s old age unit has been hosting the get-together for the elderly for over three decades.
It has also assisted many elderly in the community who could not afford to perform the Hajj (holy pilgrimage).
“The old age unit was created when our imam, Sheikh Ebrahim Gabriels, initiated this idea more than 30 years ago. The committee of Masjidur Rawbie felt the need to care for the seniors of the community and create some space where the elderly could socialise, relax and meet with people of their own age.
“The group comes together the last Wednesday of each month where breakfast and lunch are served. In November, we take them on an all-expenses-paid outing outside Cape Town,” Mr Jacobs said.
