There has been an increase in cash-in-transit heists in Lentegeur, according to the latest crime statistics.
Police Minister Bheki Cele released the crime stats on Tuesday last week. They cover the period from the beginning of April last year to the end of March this year.
Lentegeur police station also saw an increase in the number of reported sexual offences — from 25 to 28 in the latest monitoring period.
Lentegeur CPF chairman Byron de Villiers said he feared seeing the statistics next year, as several shooting had been logged in recent months.
He said the statistics would guide what needed to be done by station management.
“The CPF hopes to improve relations with the community and enhance service delivery,” he said.
He said it was good to see that murders were down by one, from 39 to 38, but several people had been killed in recent weeks.
“The (number of) attempted murders grew by 47.4%, and we call on the community to co-operate with the police in order to stamp out gangsterism,” he said.
MrDeVillierssaidsexual offences, rape and sexual assault were still very prevalent in the precinct, and, together with the police, other government departments and community organisations, they wanted to strengthen their victim support facility to deal with the scourge of violence against women and children.
“Wecallonvolunteers to come and join our victim support structures so as to deliver a better service to victims,” he said.
He commended the police for the significant increase of 90.7% in the confiscation of firearms from 43 to 82.
“We have also seen an increase of 14.8% in drug arrests and notice also that a number of drug dealers have appeared in court.”
“We hope that the justice system will be able to put them away so that our communities can become a better place,” said Mr De Villiers.
