A Rocklands girl has her award-winning art work exhibited at the Iziko South African National Gallery.
Aaliyah Hoosen, 9, a Grade 3 pupil at Yellowwood Primary School in Tafelsig, won gold in the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) visual art competition. Pupils, from Grades R to 9 across the province were invited to enter the competition titled “I Celebrate My World”, which culminated at the Iziko South African National Gallery on Wednesday August 30, where all the pupils who have achieved a gold medal exhibit their work.
“I want to be an artist when I grow up,” said Aaliyah.
She said her work depicted what she saw every day and is an expression of her imagination.
Principal Donovan Senosi calls her a “Van Gogh in the making”.
The art works were adjudicated in three categories, with gold, silver and bronze medals being awarded per phase in each district.
Criteria used to reach the final decision included use and application of the elements and principles of art (visual components of artwork); creativity (the artist’s originality); technique and media (the artist’s skill and use of various media); and visual impact and presentation (the artwork’s visually and aesthetically pleasing, the WOW factor).
The exhibition coincides with Iziko’s Heritage Month celebrations.
