Grade 3 pupils, from 10 Mitchell’s Plain schools competed in the production of a 10-minute theatrical play, which they had adapted from the book series about “Oaky”, who starts out as an acorn and grows in a big Oak tree.
The partnership between the mall and NGO Read to Rise, which focused on boosting literacy and creativity, saw Rocklands Primary School win second prize of R6 000, with R3 000 going to Liesbeeck Primary, in Portland, for third place; and R1000 to AZ Berman in fourth place.
The books were written by Westridge-born author Athol Williams and illustrated by his wife, Taryn Lock. Mr Williams and Ms Lock started literacy programme, which, over the past four years, has visited every primary school in Mitchell’s Plain to read to pupils and give them copies of the books.
