Alistair Izobell’s hit production , Remembering the Lux, is back by popular demand and returns to the Baxter Theatre from Thursday August 25 to Saturday September 17.
The show pays tribute to the Luxurama Theatre, Wynberg’s grand old dame of cinema and entertainment which was fondly referred to as the Lux.
Written and directed by Izobell and Baxter CEO and artistic director Lara Foot, Remembering the Lux brings to life the Luxurama through charming anecdotes and classic hit songs.
The ensemble features Izobell, Loukmaan Adams, Nur Abrahams, Terry Hector, Giempie Vardien, Terry Fortune, Leslie Kleinsmith, Niesha Abrahams and Kashiefa Blaauw. Most of these artists have at some point in their careers performed at the Lux.
They will be accompanied by a six-piece live band led by Donveno Prins on saxophone. Dylan Roman is on keyboards, Anthon Mannel on drums, Angelo Syster on guitar, Franco Mannel on bass and Marcell Adams plays the trumpet.
The cast will sing familiar and perennially popular songs including Where the Boys Are, Il Mondo, Spanish Eyes, Puppy Love, This is My Life and Delilah, to remember artists such as Connie Francis, Dusty Springfield, Engelbert Hump-erdink, Tom Jones, Percy Sledge, Peaches and Herb, Petula Clark, Jose Feliciano, Dobie Gray, Joe Dolan, Lovelace Watkins, Taliep Petersen, Zayn Adam, Jonathan Butler, Richard Jon Smith, Ricardo, Ronnie Joyce and Lionel Petersen who performed at the Lux.
The Lux was built in 1963 by Ronnie Quibell. It became a vital cultural hub for many integrated audiences and it preceded the Three Arts Complex in Diep River which was also established by the Quibell brothers.
It was the first theatre complex to host mixed audiences during apartheid, and in 1965 the South African government declared it a “coloureds only” venue.
The Baxter Theatre Centre has launched a special Facebook page called The Lux and the community is encouraged to join and share their own memories, pictures and stories about the once vibrant Luxurama.
Remembering the Lux runs at 8pm from Mondays to Thursdays; at 6pm and 9.15pm on Fridays; and at 4pm and 8pm on Saturdays.
