More than 200 temporary lifeguard positions are available at the City’s public swimming pools for the next summer season.
People who are suitably qualified can apply for appointment on a non-permanent, seasonal contract basis for the positions of senior municipal pool lifeguard and municipal pool lifeguard.
Applicants can take part in free supervised, pre-season fitness training at the Blue Downs and Long Street swimming pools on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, from 2pm to 4pm, until Friday June 3. “Swimming pools reached a peak of more than one million bathers during this past peak period, making it one of the busiest seasons in a decade due to the extremely hot weather experienced.
“We therefore need to have a team of well trained and competent lifeguards on duty at our amenities to ensure the safety of our patrons,” said Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.
The main swimming pool season starts in October and runs until April 2017 (for certain swimming pools, the period may continue until June 2017).
The lifeguard application process requires further training and testing for the prospective candidates. Each lifeguard has to meet requirements in line with the qualifying standards put in place by Lifesaving South Africa.
Senior municipal pool lifeguards must, among others, have a Grade 10 certificate, and a valid lifeguard certificate would be an advantage. They should have at least 24 months (four seasons) relevant experience and must have a clear criminal record and no criminal cases pending outcome or awaiting trial.
Municipal pool lifeguards must have a Grade 10 certificate or 12 months relevant lifesaving experience; and the ability to meet the requirements according to the Lifesaving South Africa certificate.
