The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the case in which a woman and her mother were shot dead by a policeman last week.
Detective Sergeant Granville Brooks, 41, who was stationed at Lentegeur police station’s Detective Unit, killed his girlfriend, Charmaine Goliath, 27, and her mother Susan April, 54, at their house, in Begonia Street, Lentegeur, on Thursday March 1.
He then killed himself.
IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini told the Plainsman that the night before the incident, Sergeant Brooks was involved in a domestic violence incident.
“He was put out of the house and disarmed of his police firearm.”
Mr Dlamini said the next morning he was back at the house, where he held Ms Goliath and her mother hostage.
He said they do not know whose firearm was used but confirmed that a police firearm was used.
The Plainsman asked whether a case of domestic violence was opened, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, South African Police Service (SAPS) Western Cape spokesperson, replied: “Kindly be advised that this office is not at liberty to comment on an IPID investigation.”
Murder and inquest dockets have been opened.
