Mitchell’s Plain residents might be wondering why their messages are not going through or why their televisions are not connecting.
That is because another manhole was hit by criminals in Lentegeur yesterday, causing severe damages that are currently being assessed by the internet providers.
VUMA confirmed via their website that due to vandalism, services have been disrupted in the area.
“We’re currently experiencing a service outage resulting in no connectivity for residents. Our team is actively working on resolving the issue,” the message read.
Ward councillor Avron Plaatjies updated the community, confirming a manhole was broken into and cables vandalised.
“Technicians are currently assessing the situation and gathering the necessary materials to proceed with repairs,” he said.
Following an inspection by the VUMA technicians earlier today, it has been confirmed that the manhole and ducts have been damaged with significant cable vandalism.
“The team is currently working on replacing the damaged duct and manhole. Once completed, they will proceed to replace the damaged cables and begin the splicing process,” Mr Plaatjies said.
Due to the extent of the damage, there is a possibility repairs on the manhole might only be completed by tomorrow.
“I will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more progress is made,” he said.
Affected resident, Shakoor Bardien, said the internet just disappeared during the course of the evening and many residents were affected.
“We don’t really know what happened, but it just went away and quite a few houses were affected and we sit without wi-fi,” he said.
