Tafelsig fieldworkers are going door-to-door to collect information about backyard rental accommodation.
This 42-month project recognises that this rental cost contributes to affordable housing delivery but fails to appreciate the role of the landlord and the rights of the tenants.
They have been contracted by non-profit organisations Development Action Group, Violence Prevention Through Urban Upgrading (VPUU), Isandla Institute and Comic Relief in the hope of improving the rights and living conditions of the tenants living in backyard structures.
Eight backyard neighbourhoods, across Cape Town, will have fieldworkers completing detailed enumeration and surveys.
The Tafelsig group is due to finish its survey on Friday March 20.
