“Our greatest challenge is to create jobs for the unemployed of today, while preparing workers for the jobs of tomorrow.” President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 2019 SONA speech.
It was reassuring to hear our President’s commitment to prioritising access to modern education for South African youth. While the statement has set high standards for the education system, it’s undoubtedly difficult to prepare the new generation not only for their effective participation into the current economy but also for jobs that haven’t been designed yet.
How do we achieve such a critical task to ensure we inject South Africa’s economy with employable talent that stays relevant over the years?
Our experience at TSIBA Business School has shown that skills transfer alone does not prepare our students. What happens once those skills are trumped by new ones? The TSIBA curriculum is designed on the interplay between three elements, Attitude, Skills and Knowledge (ASK Model, for acronym fans). The Skills and Knowledge aspect of this magic equation can become outdated rather fast with digital and technological advancements – however, Attitude helps develop not only well-educated leaders, but adaptable to constant change.
How do we know when we reached our goal? When our students go out in the world and add value to it.
Kareemah’s Delight is a bakery based in Schaapkraal, Cape Town, the brainchild of 21-year-old Kareemah Abrahams. What started as a project while studying toward her Bachelor of Business Administration at TSIBA has become a thriving business. “I listened deeply to my clients and realised that what they were asking for was not delivered in the area. Affordable homemade snacks and beautifully decorated cakes couldn’t be found in Schaapkraal before I started trading,” says the young entrepreneur.
Online applications for TSIBA’s Bachelor of Business Administration and Postgraduate Diploma in Small Enterprise Consulting are open until the 28 February 2019. Visit www.tsiba.ac.za for further information.
