■ Non-profit organisation Soil for Life is inviting unemployed people to join their 12-week Home Food Gardens programme. Training starts in June and residents from Westridge and Portland can apply. Trainees are taught sustainable, affordable ways to grow organic vegetables in the smallest of spaces. No experience is needed, but applicants must commit to weekly training for 12 weeks. The cost of R15 a person includes expert training, support and a vegetable garden starter kit with seeds, compost and mulch. For more information call 021 794 4982 during office hours or trainer Sandi Lewis on 073 159 2128 or email info@soilforlife.co.za Pictured are Shahied and Nuraan Salie of Mitchell’s Plain who joined Soil for Life’s Home Food Gardens training programme earlier this year and are already reaping the rewards.
