The community came out in their numbers to celebrate Chad Basson’s birthday last week.
Chad, who would have turned 20 on Tuesday August 14, was shot and killed when he attended a friend’s 21st birthday party (“Teen dies protecting friends”, Plainsman, August 1).
More than 100 family, friends and community members celebrated Chad’s birthday by walking through the streets of Lentegeur and singing songs in honour of him.
They counted to 20 and released 20 balloons for Chad’s birthday.
“Today is what would have been Chad’s 20th birthday. It was supposed to be a happy day. Instead we had to endure one of the most terrible days in his short lifespan.
“Criminals ended his life suddenly and violently. They cared less that his family’s lives were permanently destroyed. We serve a God of justice. We comfort ourselves that our little, innocent angel, who was never a gangster, is having his birthday with the angels,” said his mother, Dawn Basson.
“He was entrusted to us for nearly 20 years and we thank God for the honour to parent this beautiful child with the permanent smile.
“His good work on earth was finished and is needed in heaven to complete his heavenly work. Rest in peace dear soul. We will always love and miss you.
“Thank you for being the child you were. We are so proud of you. God gave us the best. You are truly a million dollar baby. Till we meet again. You made an indelible mark in this world and touched so many lives. Even in death you’ve still blessed us,” said Ms Basson.
“Day by day we are astounded by the miracles and impact you’ve made in this life,” said his father Cornelius Basson.
