■ On Thursday March 22, 13 women from Ward 75 graduated from a six-week hairdressing course. The costs had been covered by ward councillor Joan Woodman’s ward allocation funds which had been set aside to empower unemployed people who live in her ward. The project was facilitated by Deo Favente Hair and Beauty Training Centre in Westridge. Together with the Department of Social Development, they ensured that the cost of the young women’s transport and lunch were covered. The women were also given starter packs containing a hairdryer, two brushes, a comb set, a cape, scissors, a five-litre bottle of shampoo and a five-litre bottle of conditioner. This will enable them to go out and start their own businesses. Pictured is ward councillor Joan Woodman, fifth from left with Colleen Shell of Deo Favente next to her.
