Diane Munro, from Plumstead, and Tanya Sheldon, from Westridge, weed a patch of the garden.

International and local garden enthusiasts volunteered their time at Beacon Organic Garden, in Wespoort Road, Westridge, on Wednesday July 18 in honour of Mandela Day.The garden is located on the premises of Beacon School for LSEN, (Learners with Special Education Needs). Volunteers of Soil for Life, a Constantia-based non-profit organisation (NPO) which helps people learn to grow healthy, organic food using simple, low-cost, environmentally-friendly methods, supported the event. Magda Campbell founded the community garden in 2016 to help pupils with special needs become independent after leaving school, by providing them with income-generating skills. This was their second Mandela Day initiative. Pictures: Fouzia van der Fort
