Cue the music, dim the lights and hold onto your seats as Mitchell’s Plain Grade 3 pupils take to the stage to tell the story of “Oaky”.
Ten Mitchell’s Plain schools entered the “Oaky” inter-school stage play competition, which culminates in four finalists performing at Liberty Promenade Shopping Centre’s food court on Saturday November 11, at 10am.
Grade 3 pupils from Rocklands, Meadowridge, Liesbeeck and AZ Berman primary schools will perform a 10-minute theatrical play, which they have adapted from the book series about “Oaky”, who starts out as an acorn and grows in a big Oak tree.
The books were written by Westridge-born author Athol Williams and illustrated by his wife, Taryn Lock. Mr Williams and Ms Lock started the NGO Read to Rise, which, over the last four years, has visited every primary school in Mitchell’s Plain to read to pupils and give them copies of the books.
The organisation encourages and promotes the importance of reading and book ownership.
Shoppers can also shake hands with mascot “Oaky the acorn” between 3pm and 4pm today, Wednesday November 8, tomorrow Thursday November 9 and Friday November 10.
