Rocklands High School pupils and teachers gave their Christmas gifts to residents of Beaconvale Community Frail Care Centre in Beacon Valley on Friday December 8.
Instead of the teachers enjoying secret Santa amongst themselves they chose the gift that keeps on giving to many of the residents, who are often forgotten.
The pupils got whiff of this good idea and decided to chip in as well, resulting in more than 167 toiletry gift bags being given to the elderly.
A Grade 11 pupil, who wanted to remain anonymous donated R500, from his inheritance, in honour of his grandfather, who died this year.
Teacher Vivienne Roberts said it was amazing to see the elders smile.
This is the second year that the school has embarked on a community project.
“We feel that it is our social responsibility towards our community to look after our young and the elderly,” she said.
In the past two years, the pupils and staff have reached out to two orphanages and now to the frail care centre.
