Westville Primary in Westridge commemorated Freedom Day a day early on Wednesday April 26. Freedom Day, celebrated nationally on April 27, commemorates the first democratic elections held on that day in 1994 when black South Africans were allowed to vote for the first time. The Grade 5 pupils led the celebrations by reminding the school what transpired at the Rivonia Trial where Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Elias Motsoaledi, Ahmed Kathrada, Andrew Mlangeni and Dennis Goldberg were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 during the fight against apartheid.
