A 30-year-old man was arrested for the possession of an imitation firearm around lunch time on Friday August 17. Police were patrolling in Montrose Park when they noticed a man running away.
As they gave chase, they noticed him dropping something.
After apprehending the man, the officers took him to where he dropped the object and found an imitation firearm. The suspect was detained at Lentegeur SAPS.
On Wednesday August 15 at 3.30pm police received a complaint about a shooting in Bietou Street, Eastridge.
Police spotted a man fitting a description given, but the suspect started running when he saw the police vehicle. Police then gave chase and noticed the suspect throwing a firearm underneath a vehicle.
When he was apprehended and taken back to where he had thrown the firearm, police found a Rossi 38 short, with serial number removed, with three .38 live rounds and two spent cartridges. Police arrested the man, aged 22, whom they believe to be a gang member. He faces charges of possession of firearm without a license and a second charge of the unlawful possession of ammunition. He appeared in court on Friday August 17.
On Wednesday August 15 at 4pm police chased a man dressed in a blue tracksuit top with a purple backpack after they spotted him jumping over the fence of a house in Rigoletto Street, Eastridge.
When police apprehended the man, they found a purple backpack in a dustbin. Inside the bag police found a 38 Rossi with serial number AA142402.The firearm was loaded with three .38 rounds with two spent cartridges and sixteen 7.65 rounds.
Police arrested the man, aged 28, who faces charges of possession of a firearm without a license and a second charge of the unlawful possession of ammunition.
He appeared in court on Friday August 17.
On Tuesday August 14, at 1.15pm, members of SAPS’ K9 unit doing special duty in Mitchells Plain were busy with crime prevention duties in AZ Berman Drive, Beacon Valley when they spotted a white Golf which raised their suspicions. When they stopped and searched the vehicle, they found five packets of tik and 90 mandrax tablets. Police arrested an 18-year-old man who faces a charge of dealing in drugs. He is expected to soon appear in court.
Mitchells Plain station commander Brigadier Goolam urged all firearm owners to ensure their weapons were licensed and stored in a safe and that the key was kept in a safe place or the code kept secret.
He also reminded them to keep firearms away from children; teach children that a firearms are not toys and to report any loss immediately.
