Pupils from five Mitchell’s Plain high schools explored some of the jobs they might end up doing one day at a careers expo last week.
The Grades 9 and 10 pupils from Beacon Hill, Oval North, Tafelsig, AZ Berman and Aloe Junior high schools met representatives from tertiary institutions who guided them through their subject choices from Grades 10 to 12, depending on their interests and career plans.
The expo, held at the Lentegeur Hospital on Wednesday July 27, was organised by the Mitchell’s Plain day hospital, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The SA Institute of Chartered Accountants and Old Mutual were at the expo, and pupils also heard about some of the jobs people do at the hospital: medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, social work, radiography and oral health.
“The aim of the event was to reach out to pupils in our community and share with them the educational and career opportunities available to them and to encourage them to believe in a brighter and healthier future for themselves and for our country,” said Department of Health spokeswoman, Monique Johnstone.
Aloe Junior High School teacher Rakim Rooi said the 15 girls and 15 boys who accompanied him to the expo from his school had been full of questions.
“It was a great opportunity for our pupils to engage and do research on various careers. Many of our pupils are not aware of the services at the clinics and hospitals, so I am happy that they were informed about it.
“Events like these inspire our pupils to work harder and encourages them to study further, and, as teachers, we want our pupils to broaden their horizens and set goals for themselves,” he said.
