A total of 278 people were arrested in the area under the jurisdiction of the Mitchell’s Plain police cluster for various crimes between Friday May 5 to Thursday May 11.
The cluster includes Mitchell’s Plain, Lentegeur, Strandfontein, Steenberg, Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Athlone and Philippi police stations.
In a clampdown on suspected drug houses, 36 houses were searched. During these operations 10kg of dagga, 106.5 mandrax tables, 246.06g of tik and 72g of heroin, 3.7g of cocaine and one and a half bundles of khat were confiscated.
There were 131 reported cases and 22 suspects were arrested for domestic related cases.
To prevent drug and alcohol abuse, the police conducted liquor and shebeen operations, during which they searched five shebeens and confiscated just more than 43 litres of liquor. Three suspects were also arrested for dealing in liquor without the required licence.
Thirty two premises where second-hand goods are sold, were also searched and three roadblocks resulted in 12 fines – totalling R6 350 – for traffic violations.
According to Captain Ian Williams, spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain police station, 1 809 people and vehicles were stopped and searched. He said four people who were arrested, face charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
Captain Williams said 11 tracing operations were conducted, resulting in the arrest of 44 wanted suspects.
