Criminal charges laid against De Lille, Herron

Patricia De Lille
Speaker of the City of Cape Town, Dirk Smit, has formally laid criminal charges against Mayor Patricia de Lille and Mayco member for transport and urban development, Brett Herron.

Mr Smit laid the charges at the Cape Town Central police station in Buitenkant Street yesterday.

Mr Smit says the charges are in accordance with Council’s resolution taken on the Bowmans report.

This after the council’s adoption of two conflicting reports by law firm Bowmans into maladministration at the metro last week.

The one report implicates Ms De Lille and Mr Herron in wrongdoing while the other clears them.

Mr Smit said the law must now follow its course on these matters accordingly and the police will receive their full support while conducting their investigation.

Today, was meant to be Ms De Lille’s last day as mayor of Cape Town after reaching an agreement with DA leader Mmusi Maimane in August.

But it’s not clear if she will vacate her office as she has made it clear that she wants to clear her name first.

She has also denied reports that she has tendered her resignation to the speaker.
