Two suspects have been arrested for the shooting of a Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum (CPF) executive member who was shot when rival gangs opened fire in Tafelsig on Monday night.
Sakienah Daniels, 50, a member of the CPF’s child rapid response unit and the CPF member responsible for the needs of women and children, was walking in Vlakkenberg Street, when the shooting started after 8pm.
Mitchell’s Plain SAPS spokesperson, Captain Ian Williams, said Ms Daniels was trying to get the children out of the street, when she was struck by a bullet on the side of her head.
She was taken to the Mitchell’s Plain Community Health Centre and then to Groote Schuur Hospital. Ms Daniels has since been discharged and is recuperating at home.
Detectives attached to the Anti-Gang Unit arrested the suspects, aged 26 and 34, who were both found in possession of unlicensed firearms. Once charged, both suspects are due to make a court appearance in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court.
On Sunday January 27 police arrested a 25-year-old man in Eastridge for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Police spotted an Isuzu bakkie driving through a red traffic light and gave chase, stopping the vehicle in 6th Avenue, Eastridge.
Police found a plastic bag containing a black automatic pistol with one magazine and one live round. The suspect, who is not a gang member, will appear in court this week.
On Saturday January 26, at 6pm, police arrested a 37-year-old man in Melkweg Street, Rocklands, who had 10 small plastic packets of tik, 10 quarter mandrax tablets, 20 half mandrax tablets and three whole mandrax tablets in his possession.
On Friday January 25, at 5.10pm, police found 223 mandrax tablets, 42 small packets of tik and 28 dagga stoppe hidden in a dirt bin inside the kitchen at a house in Erica Street, Tafelsig. Police arrested a 52-year-old woman.
On the same day, Mitchell’s Plain police recovered two hijacked vehicles in Tafelsig. In the first incident, police received information about a possible stolen vehicle being kept at a house in Tafelberg Street, Tafelsig. The vehicle, a blue VW Golf without licence plates but with the engine number HM143817, was found to have been stolen in Kleinvlei in April last year. Police arrested two men, aged 23 and 41.
In the second incident, police spotted a silver Honda Jazz with registration CY 147 372 abandoned on a field at the Swartklip Indoor Centre, Tafelsig. The vehicle was reported to be hijacked in Athlone earlier this month. No one has been arrested yet.
On Thursday January 24 at 2am in Paulsberg Street, Tafelsig, police arrested a 34-year-old man for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. This comes after finding the firearm, a 38 special Rossi revolver with serial number D769044 with five rounds, in his possession during a search.
The firearm was reported stolen in Mitchell’s Plain in October last year.
