A Mitchell’s Plain teacher and his girlfriend from Parow ran the Two Oceans Marathon at the weekend to support an organisation at Tygerberg Hospital that helps deaf children.
Pallo Manuel, 30, of Newlands, teaches at West End Primary in Lentegeur. He ran the race with Lisa Marais, 28, at the weekend for HearUs. The couple raised R5 500.
HearUs was started by parents of children with cochlear implants.
Mr Manuel has several hearing-impaired children in his class, and not all of them can afford hearing devices.
“Being a teacher in Mitchell’s Plain gives me a chance to find opportunities for these children so that they are able to live a normal life,” he said.
The couple started training at the beginning of the year to get into shape for the race.
