A total of 561 people were arrested in the Mitchell’s Plain policing cluster between Friday June 9 and Thursday June 15.
The cluster includes Mitchell’s Plain, Lentegeur, Strandfontein, Steenberg, Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Athlone and Philippi police stations.
According to the police, 45 fines for traffic violations, totalling R44 800, were issued during roadblocks. The police also visited 950 spaza shops, most of which are owned by foreign nationals, to ensure safety and prevent business robberies and xenophobic attacks.
Police also made arrests for housebreaking and theft, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, robberies, drunk driving, murder, possession of a dangerous weapon and traffic violations.
A man and a woman were hijacked on the corner Baden Powell Drive and Eisleben Road, Rocklands on Monday June 5, at 11pm. The two were driving in Baden Powell and had turned off into Eisleben when their charcoal-coloured VW Polo, registration number CJW 996, stalled. The man then asked the woman to push the car while he tried to get it started. While they were doing so, they were approached by three men who demanded their cellphones and wallet.
According to police they got into a fight with the suspects and the man was stabbed in the back. One of the men then got into the Polo, while the others pushed until the car started and they drove off. Before leaving, they had grabbed the woman’s phone and drove off.
Mitchell’s Plain police station spokesperson Captain Ian Williams, is urging residents to be vigilant around the beach areas of Baden Powell Drive. “There have been several reports in the past where people have been attacked while parked along the coastline, especially at night. The perpetrators often point guns at their victims and rob them of their possessions, including their vehicles. The police are patrolling the beaches but often stop to warn people of the possible dangers especially at night,” he said.
A man was arrested for being in possession of 400 mandrax tablets to the street value of R12 000, in Dune Drive, around 10am on Saturday June 17. He will appear in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of drugs.
A woman, aged 24, and man, 40, were arrested for being in possession of drugs and stolen phones, in Melkweg Street, in Rocklands, just after 11am on Monday June 19.
The police found 120 packets of tik, 30 half mandrax tablets and five full mandrax tablets. The woman was in possession of two cellphones. They are expected to appear in court soon.
A man, aged 37, was arrested for selling liquor without a valid licence in Ventura Street in Rocklands, at 1pm on Thursday June 15. The police found 29.25 litres of alcohol. He will appear in court soon.
