SmartCape computers at Lentegeur library are currently offline due to cable theft.
Mitchell’s Plain United Residence Forum deputy chairperson, Michael Jacobs called this unacceptable and said the computers have been off for several months when students could have been making use of them.
The City of Cape Town said Telkom has advised that they will not replace the line due to continued cable theft.
Mr Jacobs urged residents to come forward when they have information about these crimes. “I call on the community to assist in this regard, to bring those perpetrators to light and protect our facilities,” said Mr Jacobs.
“This is academic terrorism. When libraries are vandalised it has a negative impact on people especially pupils. They need to use the computers for school assignments and research, parents need to apply to schools online, to name a few,” he said.
Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral committee member for community services and health, said on Friday March 13 that they are currently investigating adding the SmartCape computers onto a radio link connection on the premises.
“The work required to add the computers to this radio connection will be completed by mid-April.”
