In light of Child Protection Week, MEC for Social Development Albert Fritz and Premier Helen Zille held a door-to-door awareness campaign in Beacon Valley on Monday May 29, accompanied by the department’s social workers from the Mitchell’s Plain office, NGOsSafeline and Khululeka Grief Support.
The theme for 2017 is “Child protection is everyone’s business”. The department spends the largest portion of its budget, which is R651.5 million, and resources, which is 1 510 social work professionals, on services that empower children and families in the province. Mr Fritz will be leading the department’s commemorative efforts over Child Protection Week, which includes a church service at Christ the Mediator Anglican Church in Wall Street, Portland, at 10am tomorrow Thursday June 1, in memory of abused and murdered children as well as a dialogue today Wednesday May 31, at 2pm at the Centre for the Book at 62 Queen Victoria Street, hosted by the department and at which Ms Zille will be the key speaker. Mr Fritz urged residents to report any cases of child abandonment, neglect and missing children to their hotline on 0800 220 250.
