Beaconvale Community Frail Care Centre is in need of board members, after three resigned in the past three months.

The non-profit organisation at the corner of Rambler and Pontiac Streets in Beacon Valley, is home to 135 residents, including the frail, disabled, destitute, community organisations and offers daycare programmes for seniors and early childhood development for children.

Treasurer Lydia Veldsman, additional member James Mentor, deputy chairperson Carol Mentor and chairperson Solomon Philander were elected during the annual general meeting on March 17 2017, just after the financial year for 2016/2017 closed (“New board, new start for frail care centre”, October 18, 2017). Their election came after there hadn’t been a functional board for six years.

Ms Veldsman and Mr Mentor, however, resigned in March this year. This followed the resignation of secretary Shawn Webber the month before.

Raymond Mitchell, manager of the centre, said the board played an oversight role to ensure the smooth running of the centre.

“Representatives who wish to serve on the board must know what the needs are of the centre, and its community. They must have the expertise to run the organisation and come with an open mind to put the needs of the organisation first,” he said.

Mr Philander, councillor for Ward 79 and chairman of the board, who is also a social worker by profession, said they needed to immediately fill the vacancies of treasurer and additional member.

Suitable candidates should understand the role of an NGO management board; have proven experience in financial management or finance background; understand fundraising; and their experience in working in the community would be advantageous.

Applicants can send their curriculum vitae and letter of motivation to beaconvalechair@gmail.com by Thursday April 25.
