A young soccer player from Milano United FC has the chance to show off his skills in Sweden, but needs the help of the community to make his dreams come true.
Keano Beckett, 14, from Rocklands, has always had a passion for sport, having played school rugby for two years before realising that soccer was his first love.
At the age of 11 he started playing for Bayhill United in Rocklands before heading to a trial at Milano, where he is now playing. The central defender takes his inspiration from his role model, Spanish footballer Sergio Ramos, and said he wants to play for his favourite club, Liverpool, one day.
“I want to be like Ramos and be one of the best defenders in Europe. Going to this tournament will be a good stepping stone toward my dream,” said Keano.
Keano’s mother, Natashe Beckett, 39, said she was proud of her son and impressed with his progress over the past three years that he has been playing soccer.
“Since he started playing soccer, he has won an individual award for every season,” said Ms Beckett.
Keano won his most recent award at the end of the 2017 season, being named Milano’s player of the season in his division.
He has been selected to go to Sweden with Milano United to take part in the Gothia Cup, the largest international youth tournament in the world.
The event will take place between Saturday July 14 and Saturday July 21 – but he has to raise R20000 to be able to go with the team.
To raise the necessary funds, Ms Beckett has been styling the hair of residents in the community on Fridays and Saturdays, while also working her normal job.
She is also hosting an event in Rocklands on Friday March 16, at the Pink Lady from 8pm. Tickets are R40 each.
“As a mother, I do whatever needs to be done in order for my child to achieve his dream because this is what he really wants to do, and I will support him,” said Ms Beckett.
