In celebration of Women’s Day, Amanda Sickle launched her book titled My Story at the 3 Bears Academy and Training Centre on Wednesday August 9.
The book features the stories of nine women and is aimed at inspiring other women. She said every chapter featured a different topic with a different story, with chapters titled, among others, Just breathe, My Bounce Back Ability and The choice is yours: all choices or decisions have consequences.
Ms Sickle – who is an avid reader – proof read, edited, designed and published the book herself. “It feels great to have our family and friends here today.
“Thank you to every person who has been involved in the book, and we hope it will inspire people,” she said.
She grew up in Silvertown and Manenberg and then moved Portland. “I now live in Wynberg but I always go back to Mitchell’s Plain – it has my heart,” she said.
Ms Sickle works full-time as an office manager at a research organisation.
She is the founder of a community initiative called PhenomenalWomen which aims to rebuild and restore women to enable them to move from being a victim to victor, encourage them to be independent and stimulate entrepreneurship, self-reliance and economic stability. She believes that “when you teach a woman to fish, you feed her for a lifetime”.
She is also the founder of The Reading Room, which is based in Portland, and believes that when you instil a love for reading in a child, you give that child a skill that can be used as currency for the future. Email amanda.sickle@gmail.com
