The vigilance and swift action of Lentegeur police led to the arrest of a man in possession of stolen industrial batteries on Thursday June 8.
Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith, spokeswoman for Lentegeur police, said while police were patrolling in Highlands Drive, they spotted people loading items into a car.
“When they approached the car, it sped off and police gave chase. The driver was forced to stop.”
Warrant Officer Kleinsmith said five heavy duty industrial batteries were found by police when they searched the car.
“The driver could not offer an explanation for the possession of the batteries and he was arrested. An investigation by police led them back to the area where they originally spotted the criminals, where they found 11 similar batteries and implements used to detach the batteries from where they were stolen. The estimated total value of the stolen items amounted to R80 000.”
The 36-year-old man appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court last week.
“His accomplices are being sought and the origin of the batteries is under investigation,”Warrant Officer Kleinsmith said.
Lentegeur police is appealing to the community to help find the Dawson and Van Schalkwyk families of Mitchell’s Plain.
Elizabeth Dawson had alleged that Edward Roman fraudulently sold their family home in Montclare and that they never saw the profits of the sale. Police believe the family reside in the Montrose Park area (“Estate agent robbed us, says family”, April 4, 2007).

Mitchell’s Plain police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a shooting on Tuesday June 6 on the corners of Hadley Page and Ventura roads, in Rocklands.
Captain Ian Williams, spokesman at Mitchell’s Plain police, said when they arrived on the scene at around 8pm, police found a 24-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Nobody has been arrested. Anyone with information about the incident can call the investigating officer Detective Constable Ashley Campbell of the Mitchell’s Plain serious and violent crimes unit on 082 777 8076.
On the same day, police were conducting a crime prevention operation in Silvermine Street, Tafelsig, at 5pm, when they received information about drugs being sold at a house in the area.
At the house they found 19 packets of tik and arrested a 33-year-old woman.
A 26-year-old man was arrested after he attempted to flee from police by running across the roofs of homes in Rocklands on Saturday June 10 at around 10.30pm.
As he was arrested, he flung what looked like a firearm into a nearby yard.
Police searched the area and found a zip gun. The man faces a charge of being in the possession of a prohibited firearm.
He was due to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday June 12.
Mitchell’s Plain police arrested a 23-year-old man on Saturday June 10, after they received information about him being in possession of a stolen bakkie. “Police were conducting patrols in 4th Avenue in Eastridge when they spotted the vehicle, a white Nissan bakkie.
The bakkie had been reported stolen in Bothasig.
Mitchell’s Plain detectives executing warrants of arrest in Gazelle Street, Eastridge, on Friday June 9 caught a 29-year-old man with two rounds of ammunition as well as a police stamp in his pockets.
He faces charges relating to the unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of stolen property. The was due to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Monday June 12.
