Last week Mitchell’s Plain police found the body of a dead gang member in Beacon Valley and seized four illegal firearms in Tafelsig and Eastridge.
The body of the man police believe to have been a gang member, was found around 10pm on Sunday August 18 after a shooting in Lincoln Street. The 28-year-old had been shot multiple times in the head and body in an incident police say was gang-related.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Randal Davids of Mitchell’s Plain Serious and Violent Crimes unit at 082 778 076.
Two days later, on Tuesday August 20, police found a 9mm firearm with 10 live rounds when they searched a house in Wemmershoek Street, Tafelsig at 7.06pm. A man, 44, was arrested and faces a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He appeared in court on Thursday August 22.
The next day police seized another 9mm firearm with magazine and eight live 9mm rounds when they stopped and searched a 17-year-old boy in Othello Street, Eastridge, at 7.15am. He was arrested and faces a charge of illegal possession of firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He is expected to appear in court soon.
Previously, police had found a silver-coloured 9mm Star firearm with four live rounds and its serial number filed off, when they searched a house in Sentinel Street, Tafelsig at 6.30pm, on Saturday August 17.
Two men, 31 and 34, were arrested.
They also confiscated a black and silver coloured CZ 9mm pistol with nine live rounds and its serial number filed off after responding to a shooting on the corner of Spine Road and Katdoring Street, Eastridge at 5.50pm on Friday August 16.
Police had seen a man shooting at the scene before throwing the firearm on the ground and then running off.
Police, however, managed to arrest the man, 22, who faces a charge of possession of
prohibited firearm and the unlawful possession of ammunition.
He is expected to appear in court soon.
