Sunshine Seniors’ Club celebrated its 10th anniversary at United Congregational Church, corner of Park Avenue and Dagbreek Street, in Westridge, on Wednesday August 10.
The members meet every Wednesday, from 10am until 2pm for various activities, including exercise, tea, crochet and knitting.
Founder and assistant treasurer Kathy Nell said a decade ago, they were one of about 200 clubs in Mitchell’s Plain.
“We used to receive a budget of R12 000, from the Department of Social Development, which we could use for anything, but we used to buy refreshments for the seniors,” she said.
Ms Nell said they had to account for every cent and had paid R2 a month.
This has now been bumped up to R5 a week.
“It is only by the grace of God that we have been able to entertain ourselves,” she said.
The club evolved from just meetings to outings, sporting activities and arts and crafts. For details, call Mavis Cupido 021 391 2802.
