The oldest parishioner at Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church in Westridge and the oldest member of Club 60 Seniors’ Club, Johanna Botha, better known as Ma Botha, celebrated her 99th birthday last week.
The Westridge great great-grandmother, who is also fondly referred to the “Bingo queen”, loves to play dominoes.
Born and raised in Cape Town central business district (CBD), Ma Botha married Benjamin Botha at St Mark’s Anglican Church in District Six.
Together they moved to Woodstock, then to Parow, Bridgetown, Durban and finally Westridge, where Ma Botha has been living for more than 40 years.
Mr Botha died at age 43.
The couple had three children, one of whom died. Ma Botha has seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren, and a third one is on its way.
“I worked very hard for my family,” said Ma Botha.
She lives with her youngest daughter Gail Flowers, who said: “Ons sit vas maar ek is baie lief vir haar. My mother worked hard for us,” she said.
