A total of 548 people were arrested in the Mitchell’s Plain cluster, between Friday April 21 and Thursday April 28.
The cluster includes areas which fall into the jurisdiction of Mitchell’s Plain, Lentegeur, Strandfontein, Steenberg, Grassy Park, Lansdowne, Athlone and Philippi police stations.
According to police, 204 people were arrested for being in possession of drugs; 95 houses were searched for drugs, and police confiscated 783.45g of dagga, 98.55g of Mandrax tablets, 175.51g of tik and 48.02g of heroin during these operations.
Eight people were arrested for domestic violence-related incidents. The police also visited liquor outlets and shebeens in the area, they searched eight places and 48.750 litres of liquor were confiscated. They arrested two people.
The police arrested five people for being in possession of five illegal firearms and ammunition, and during the 12 tracing operations, 27 wanted suspects were arrested.
The other suspects were arrested for crimes including housebreaking and theft, theft of motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, robberies, drunk driving, murder, possession of dangerous weapons and traffic violations.
Police also arrested a 37-year-old man in Martine Street, Tafelsig, around 9.10pm on Monday April 24, when he was found to be in possession of a Pietro Beretta 9mm pistol with a magazine and seven rounds.
He is due to appear in Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s court soon.
