Shout out to dance crews

Well-known entertainer and drama teacher, Larey Marks, is calling on all freestyle dance crews to showcase their talent at the annual dance competition that he hosts, which is marking its 20th anniversary.

Dance-a-thon 20 will be staged at Mitchell Heights Primary School, on the corner Tafelberg and Bokkeveld streets, Tafelsig, this Friday August 5, at 8pm, where freestyle dance crews will be judged on their choreography, costume and plot.

To celebrate the competition’s 20th anniversary, members of Unlimited Dance Company, who were trail blazers of freestyle dancing in the 90s, will be adjudicating at the dance-a-thon.

“I want people to know that freestyle is still alive,” said Mr Marks, who is also the former manager of Unlimited.

He said all former freestyle dancers should attend to see how the genre has evolved.

A Strandfontein resident, Mr Marks heads the drama department at the New English School in Jabriya, Kuwait, an English medium, private school and returns homes every year to host the competition in Mitchell’s Plain. First prize winners will receive R2 500, second prize is R1 500 and third prize is R1 000. Entry is R25 for dancers and supporters and funds raised will be reinvested into the redevelopment of dance crews.
