The annual National Youth Music Competition (NYMC) is poised to resume in 2021.
The competition for classical instrumentalists between the ages of 14 and 19 had to be cancelled this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2021 NYMC is scheduled to take place from Tuesday August 3 to Saturday August 7 at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow. Aspirant contestants can take part in five categories – piano, string, woodwind, brass and other instruments that include harp and percussion.
Presented by the National Youth Music Foundation (NYMF), the closing date for prospective candidates to submit audition videos is Monday March 29.
“We are delighted to have this flagship event sailing again,” says NYMF chairman Michael Maas.
“The NYMF keeps a close eye on Covid-19. We are ready for any curved balls emanating from the pandemic.”
The NYMC commands stamina, technical excellence and strong interpretative skills. The young contenders compete over four rounds, playing an extensive repertoire of works from different style periods.
There are cash prizes and gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs.
