Mitchell’s Plain Festival

The annual Mitchells Plain Festival.

More than 40 000 people are expected to descend on Westridge Gardens, for the annual DStv Mitchell’s Plain Festival powered by the Plainsman, from Friday November 29 to Sunday December 1.

There will be performances by some of Cape Town’s finest artists, while scores of small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) will exhibit their goods and services.

Another highlight of the festival is the annual air show hosted by the SANDF and the SA Airforce.

Entrepreneur and social activist, Rozario Brown said he created the festival as a platform for community leaders, SMMEs, NGOs and local entertainers, to come together and form partnerships to enable sound business relationships and uplift the community.

The key objective of the event, he said, was to showcase Mitchell’s Plain, the Cape Flats and surrounding areas, as stable and viable communities to do business in and to raise awareness about the positive things happening within the community.

Mr Brown added that they have ensured all aspects around the safety of those attending the festival are covered. To this end, the organisers have once again partnered with the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate, as well as SAPS, the local neighbourhood watch and private security providers.

But, said Mr Brown, “We don’t only want to focus on the negative.  Mitchell’s Plain is definitely not only about crime, gangs, and violence.

“There are many positive aspects to this community. We have some of the most successful shopping malls in the Western Cape, which creates thousands of employment opportunities for our local people. Mitchell’s Plain is without a doubt one of the country’s most popular communities in terms of local talent.

“The festival is also about creating a platform to bring the people together, not only from Mitchell’s Plain, but surrounding communities on the Cape Flats too.”

To avoid the long queues on festival weekend, you can pre-book tickets through Computicket or from Shoprite and Checkers.
