A whopping 9 000 downloads of his single Me and You in two weeks – this is an achievement Eastridge rapper Kurt Brown, also known as MC Kay B, is rightfully very proud of.
The single, which also features Brolin Moffat aka Fleezy from Tafelsig, was released on February 18, on DataFileHost.
Seven years ago rapping was a dream for Kurt, today he is making waves on social networks, events, the studio and even in the United Kingdom.
Filled with enthusiasm and love for music, Kurt is determined to pursue a career in the hip-hop industry. He is overwhelmed by the response to the track they have worked so hard on.
“We were surprised and happy by the number of downloads we have had. It was unexpected. Me and You is a hip-hop song about love. It has a cool beat, and female vocals.
“The song also got playlisted on Kiss Radio in the UK and back home it is doing well after its release, especially in Johannesburg, Durban and Pretoria. The music video is done and will soon hit MTV base and Channel O,” he said.
Kurt said his love for music started at the age of 16, when he started writing songs. At the age of 20 he recorded his first song with DBoy called Chosen One.
The song is currently on YouTube and was shot on the False Bay coastline in Mitchell’s Plain. “Music makes me happy, and when I am in the studio I forget about life outside. I rap about everything – social issues such as gangsterism, drug usage, poverty and love,” he said.
The rapper grew up in Eastridge and attended Littlewood Primary and Tafelsig High School.
“Mitchell’s Plain is my home and even though there are social ills that exist, there are good people doing positive things, and that is what I try and reflect in my music. I have had people supporting me throughout my journey, family and friend who have supported me and have taught me to never give up on your dream.
“Last year Fleezy and I received funding from the Motsepe Foundation, (started by business leader Patrice Motsepe and his wife, Dr Precious Motsepe) and with the funds we built up our own studio, since then we have never stopped making music,” he said.
Kurt and Brolin are now working on an album called Go Big or Go Home which they are excited about. Chosen One was nominated for the best music video by the Cape Flats Film Festival last year.
Kurt is currently doing events and often attends park jams. He is encouraging people to support local artists as they work extremely hard on their craft.
“I have a dream to be a successful artist and I am willing to work hard to make it a reality. Lessons I have learnt throughout my music journey is to be humble, patient and consistent. So, get that track and enjoy it!”
