Three men will pay tribute to women jazz artists at West End on Friday April 20.
Organisers Ronald Jones from Mitchell’s Plain, Cole Adams and David October will celebrate the women of jazz in a show that will also feature the RJ Vox Band.
“I feel the women of jazz needs to be celebrated by us men. They are brilliant artists who influence a lot of our music careers,” said Mr Jones.
“I remember going to see Jill Scott at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (2013) and what an amazing artist she is live. Since then I had this idea but never knew what I wanted to do with it. ”
Ronald, 30, who started singing in church at the age of 6, said his love of jazz stems from his very musical family.
He has performed at small events in the city, had his break when he was discovered by Soli Philander and the rest of his team working for Taxi Radio. He later joined the team as a radio presenter on Taxi Radio, a co-presenter on TaxiVision on CTV and performed in many other performance shows, including the Aids Benefit Concert held at Artscape in July 2012, Jazz On The Lawn and many music festivals in and around Cape Town.
He also was nominated as Performing Artist of the Year within the LGBTI community at the EVH Pink Awards. Meanwhile, he has been recording demos and tracks.
He joined the all-male, Mitchell’s Plain, jazz band, RJ & On The Move, as the lead singer but left to start his own band, RJ Vox Band, with Luke Soldaat, Ashwin Jacobs, Daniel van Schalkwyk and Chad Arries.
Fellow tribute organiser Cole Adams, 18, is a singer who started performing at the age of 9. He has performed on the biggest platforms in the Cape, and shared the stage with Alistair Izobell, Donveno Prins and many more.
He opened up the 17th annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival free concert (2017)as part of an all star band. In the same year he also won best male vocalist at the High School Jam.
The last organiser, David October, 31, is a singer who started performing at the age of 22.
He has performed on the biggest platforms in the Cape, and shared the stage with Ian Smith, Gift Gwe, Soli Philander and many more.
In 2013 he performed at various events like the Edu Jazz Concert alongside the Delft Big Band. He went on a tour to France doing performances in various states with the Delft Big Band and performed twice on different occasions at the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
David also had the opportunity to perform with a band from Germany, at the Artscape, at the Woodstock Live Jazz Concert and many corporate events. He has also gone on to perform at the Soweto Theatre in Johannesburg.
